Building in São Paulo
Original artwork description:
Mixed media with acrylic paint and spray on canvas. Multi-layer stencil, the original size is 29.7 × 21 cm.
Inspiration:
Walking down an avenue in 2017 this building caught my attention and I took an unpretentious photo to keep in my visual archive. The photo was the basis for this experiment, but I chose not to replicate the original colours of the building and rather to capture the essence of the contrast it creates among that sea of gray and pastel tones.
This building was built in the 70s and is a traditional hotel in this region. The facade was renovated in 2013 to modernize and to create a 30 floors interactive piece of art. Metal sheets created a pixelated skin over concrete. The design was created with parametric software to analyze the sounds in the building’s surroundings and generate the graphic patterns that were later used to position the metal sheets of different colours. At night, a LEDs lighting system is used to reproduce drawings and animations sent in by the public. It is a very interesting and unique architectural project in Latin America, created by Guto Requena as an extension of their research on the “Hacked City”.
